    SBR's Empty SBR's

Post by Devereaux Wed May 28, 2014 5:05 pm

I hear in the gunshop yesterday that the ATF screwed up and now SBR's no longer need the stamp, courtesy of the SCOTUS.

    ?Anyone know anything about this.

Imagine that! Building a legal SBR in Illinois, no less.

I would love that if it were true, but I have not heard anything about that. Usually I hear stuff like that through the gunshop grapevine, but haven't yet. Got any links or info?

    Noooooo.......
    This guy is wrong...
Still need the stamp. Perhaps he was confusing that with the AR pistol with a brace on the tube.
Which works very similarly to the SBR setup. So much so that I am slowly building one myself.

Doc, with a suppressor attached, you get the same overall length (roughly) as a regular sized AR--which makes a .300 blk AR pistol quite nice and usable.

yeah, the top one is a regular 5.56 carbine, the bottom one is a .300 blk pistol. The pistol is very shootable without having to hold it weird like the other AR pistols.

yeah, I don't get it... What makes a shorter barrel more dangerous or deadly? It could be argued that due to the shorter barrels and lower velocities, that SBR's are less deadly.

Corn, reading about the 1934 National Firearms Act (NFA), it becomes immediately obvious that rationality had nothing to do with it. It was an emotion-based reaction to Prohibition gangland warfare, Great Depression unrest, a few highly publicized criminal gangs, anarchists, and the various "Worker" parties. The politicians tried to ban everything that scared them; short barreled shotguns, rifles, automatic weapons, etc. Suppressors were thrown in at the last minute because some poli's fear that hungry people could poach without being heard. Much of their information came from the movies; fears based on Hollywood fantasies.

    I guess things never change.

BTW: Nice firearms. The 300BLK is a 10" barrel? Any functioning problems, over-gassing?

CF, I bought this upper: http://www.advanced-armament.com/300-BLK-Upper-9-Barrel_p_461.html

I have not had any problems with this upper yet. When the suppressor is on, however, you do get a little gas back in the face (happens with most non-piston AR's when they are suppressed).

DEAL ALERT: 10 PMags for $80

    http://www.networkedblogs.com/Xjhan

Let's see: 10 PMags (2nd Gen - Non window 30 rounders) for $80. 10 into 80, carry the zero.... that's 8 bucks a piece! A pretty good deal for top quality magazines. Since I'm in Kalifornia, I can't order these, so I do not know how much shipping and handling are.

Hmm... I consider the minimum number of any semi-auto's mags to be six. Chiefly because I intend to keep my firearms for a lifetime, and those things do break.  I've got a pistol I really like - but I only have three magazines. The gun is now all but a safe queen.

For ARs, the answer is LOTS. They're cheap, widely used, threatened by a host of politicians, will always (hopefully) be in demand, and should make excellent trade bait. I'd buy a range of steel, aluminum GIs, Brownells, etc., as well as Magpuls. I wouldn't trust plastic for what could very well be a multi-generational firearm. However, for current use, Magpuls shine.

Minimum AR mag count: 12?* And several rebuild kits: for the chilluns. Don't forget the stripper clips and spoons.

    Like to hear other opinions.

    * This is per AR-15. If you have multiple ARs, the total amount of mags will increase dramatically with each firearm.

I would second CF. Mags are the overlooked part of weapons.

My sense is that 6 is OK for a pistol, but if you can swing it, 10 is better.

For an AR, I would start with 30 and work forward. Consider at least 22 per rifle as a guide if you ever have to hit the road with them (IIRC 7 to a bandoleer, plus one in the weapon). I would have AT LEAST 10 rebuild kits for the AR's -- and replace them as you use them. I pretty much stick to the aluminum 30-rnd ones. I hear all the stuff about MagPul's, but I also know that in the sandbox when they go bad, they just disintegrate. The metal ones seem to have immortality. Yes, you can step on them, but even then you could probably repair them back to serviceable. The biggest issue I have found with the metals is caring for the BOTTOM tags and the floorplate. When those go, the mag is mostly shot.

There are some SERIOUSLY high end AR mags about. I have 2 from HK, and they are almost works of art.

I probably have around 25ish pmags, but I guess I should really pick up a few GI/Aluminum/Steel mags for the future. I wonder what the actual shelf life of a pmag is. Good idea for the mag rebuild kits (springs & followers), I should probably buy a few of those too. I have plenty of the old steel mags for my AK's which are built to be passed on several generations. I guess that is one nice thing about lever actions and revolvers... no spare mags to worry about. Extra pmags are great to have when people start panic buys--great way to earn a few bucks to go towards another toy when prices drop again.

Don't recollect. I bought them a number of years ago, before I got into this madness of building AR's. At the time I had a Colt H-Bar which had never been fired - I ended up never shooting it, but gave it to my godson as something from me to remember me. But I kept the mags. I gave him a couple rebuilt mags and a lead to Brownell's when they were having a sale on their aluminum 30's. I got a bunch of those myself.

Those are them! Man, you ought to actually SEE them. Considering that stuff like Sig pistol mags run up to $48 each, it really isn't all that expensive. It's just that we're all accustomed to $10 aluminum mags. These are NOT in that category. Get one. Or two. You will like them. (But you probably won't buy a bunch more at that price.) It's always good to know what the Mercedes class looks like in something.
