Been looking for 2400 powder for a VERY long time with no success.  Anybody had better luck?  Are you guys able to find the powders you need?  I've had good luck with everything except 2400.

Nope. I've given up looking for 2400 and have taken up ventures for which I'm more likely to succeed . . . things line unicorn hunting and making household appliances move with my mind.

I've decided to seek other powders to take over tasks for which I used 2400. About a month ago I scored 4 pounds of AA9 from gunbot.net, and it's been a reasonable replacement (obviously, using AA9 recipes, though). I've also been looking at IMR 4227, H110 and Winchester 296.

I've also been doing the same... bought a jug of 4227 to try that out for some 300 blk, 500 mag, etc... loads. Also bought some 5744.

Dang Corn, too bad Utah is pretty far from Tennessee. I visited a reloading shop at lunch and they had five 1-pound containers of 2400 on the shelves. Dude said they've been on the shelves for a while.

I'd have gotten some, but I'm pretty deep in my stock of AA9 at the moment.

Well, this store's shelves were a happy sight. Had AA9, 7 and 5, 2400, Power Pistol, IMR 4227, and a ton of rifle powders. No Unique or fast burning powders, though.

Too bad hazmat fees exist, or I would gladly pay for you to ship me some 2400. What was the price on the 2400?

It was pretty cheap. I think it was $22 or $24.

I'm still thinking about going back and getting some, even though I wouldn't need it for at least a year.

do they have a limit on how much you could buy? If they have enough, and let you buy enough, it may be worth the hazmat fee.

Personally, I think it is one of the most versatile slow burning powders.

I use slow burning powders primarily for higher velocity magnum calibers, 44 mag, 357 mag, and 10mm. I especially love it for 357 mag out of a rifle and for 357 mag cast bullets out of a revolver.

Since 2400 is really hard to find these days, I've pretty much switched over to AA#9, which works well, but it doesn't have the same wide window of performance as 2400. 2400 has a larger range of velocities that I can load than AA9.

?Isn't AA#9 really dirty shooting. I think that's the powder some guys used for IPSC race guns (.38 Super hot loaded).

Yeah, it's dirty. Really LOUD, too. But honestly, I can't tell much difference between AA9 and 2400 with leftover residue. As long as the leftover residue is just powder, and not leading, I'm ok with it. I clean everything when I get home from the range, so it's not much of an issue for me.

A very versatile powder, especially nice with cast bullets. Dirty doesn't bother me much as long as it shoots straight. A lot of the calibers I load for these days require magnum pistol powders (300 blk, 44 mag, 357 mag, 500 mag, 50 beowulf, 45 colt, etc...).

?Why would .45 Colt require a magnum powder. I am planning on loading mine with Trail Boss, hardly a magnum powder I would think.

45 colt doesn't require magnum powders when you are loading light to mid range, but it can use them for the heavier loads.

OK. You guys know the powder stuff. My understanding was that I could load a "max" load with Trail Boss, to kind of match the old black powder loads. ?True or false. I am not looking for anything hotter, although I know you can load hotter.

Trailboss is a cool powder. You can basically load it to the base of the bullet and have it be safe. Just don't compress it. Trailboss works great for lower velocity & lower recoil loads. I love it for my subsonic 300 blk bolt gun/ single shot rifle loads. It is nice and quiet with a suppressor!
