    Bullet expansion? Empty Bullet expansion?

Post by Cornmastah Wed Sep 16, 2015 7:24 pm

I was digging in my "bullet catch," (a 5 gallon bucket full of sand) and was pulling out the cast lead bullets in the post fired state.  I wanted to see how much some of them had expanded, as well as collect them to melt them down again and shoot them again.  I found a few really cool looking ones.  I will try to get some pics of them.

This one is a 500 mag bullet made out of a harder alloy:
    Bullet expansion? 50-1

    Bullet expansion? 50-2

This one is a 30 cal powder coated with a gas check cast out of a softer alloy, shot at a higher velocity
    Bullet expansion? 30-1

    Bullet expansion? 30-2

    Bullet expansion? 30-3

I was surprised how much the soft lead flattened out. I was more surprised that the gas check remained attached to the bullet.

I wonder if the powder coating helped hold the lead together instead of fragmenting off into lots of little pieces.
