    Another GRRN refugee.

Mighty glad that Doc opened his own forum. Thanks Doc! I look forward to asking weird questions that pop up in my head from time to time.

I arrived at GRRN just in time to sweep up. An aged newbie to handguns, with an affinity for the .38 wheelgun and those nice holes wadcutters make.

I would hasten to add that it is pronounced leave-her. Simon from Victoria, Australia. I have popped up a few times in the chat room however the time difference makes things tricky. It is around 1300-1400 the Thursday rather than the Wed night (due to us being closer to the dateline) that the show is live for me. This makes it in the middle of the work day for me.
Loves - reloading, casting, the 30-30 and the 35 Whelen.

Whoa! Now here's a serious addict! 35 Whelen. Those that got 'em absolutely love 'em. Those that don't usually scratch their heads, "?35 What." America just had a huge increase in gun owners. I bet not one in a hundred of those even know what .35 Whelen is.

Good to be out of the crowd, eh?

BTW, welcome! Great to hear from Australia. I was only there once, back in '70, but I loved the people. Constantly amazed that they sounded Brit but didn't act anything like Brits (that was a big plus). (OK. So my ear wasn't very developed then.)

We have a lot of listeners from The Land Down Under. Simon is a favorite of mine. Dev and Simon exactly. .35 Whelen is such a great cartridge. Only true gunnies now know what that is. If you own one, Master in my book.

The 35 whelen was arrived at due to it being quite cast bullet friendly, from 158grain 38special to 250grain thumpers. Although it has not been blooded as yet the goal is Sambar - the large introduced deer from Ceylon that live here in Victoria. They grow large, like wapiti or elk and the 35 whelen with well constructed jacketed bullets will be a good choice.
30-30 is another favourite calibre, three rifles currently in this. Pre-64 win 1894, Savage 340 bolt and Savage 99. 30-30 is also a great calibre for cast and reloading and a pleasure to shoot ranging from little 90grain SWC designed for the 32acp up to 170grain.

Oh man, you've got two of my bucket-list (wanted badly) guns the pre-'64 Win '94 and the Savage 99. And the 340 doesn't look to bad either.

But please, don't encourage Doc and his Leaver-itis.

The Savage 340 are a fairly agricultural rifle but it is a good way to get a bolt action in 30-30. It has a couple of quirks - a single lug bolt head (like the 30-40 krag) meaning lighter loads and an open topped rear receiver (like mannlicher) meaning no scope rails and needing to use side mounts. It also has a barrel band which must affect barrel harmonics. They also were also produced in 22 hornet, 222r, 223.

    Hey Stump, welcome.

Think all the good barbers left town. Wasn't enough gainful employment.

Hello there, Stump, and welcome! I keep threatening to move to Dallas, and my wife then counters with leaving me. But my daughter lives in Dallas, so I suspect if I actually did something crazy - like bought a house out there - she might become more amenable to at least a dual living thing. AND I could then move my (very few) guns to Texas and not worry so much about them being taken.
