Conceal Carry Guns Empty Conceal Carry Guns

Post by Tennessee Jed Fri Oct 24, 2014 11:18 am

Since we have this new section, I thought I'd continue the conceal carry guns discussion here.  For those who haven't seen it, it's in a thread I started in the "Lever Guns" section, regarding a Henry Big Boy rifle I'm smitten with.  (Yes, we are not afraid to drift a topic around here.)

    I'm in a photo-sharing mood, so here's a picture of the S&W 629 I mentioned in that thread:

And here's a picture of a recent target I shot with it, using 200 grain wadcutters which are the same weight and have the same velocity of the carry ammo I use in that 629 (the carry ammo being Underwood 44 Specials with 200 grain Gold Dots at 1100 fps).

Yes, I know.  It's heavy.  And big.  And it only holds 6 rounds.  I love this revolver, though.  When wearing fall and winter clothing, and wearing an IWB holster from Theis Holsters (similar to Crossbreed), the Spegel boot grips never print.  It's not any heavier than a full-sized 1911, it's very accurate, and follow up shots are quick with these high level 44 specials (which generate 537.5 ft-lbs of muzzle energy).

Certainly, it's not for everyone.  But I think it's a fine choice for wheelgun fanatics who are large mammals, like me.

They don't. I do have other sights on other guns (e.g., Dawson Precision adjustable sights on a Glock) that once in a blue moon might catch on a cover garment, but the S&W adjustable sights aren't tall enough be be an issue for me.

I'd post a pic of my carry gun, but it's just a glock 19. If you've seen one, you've seen them all.

Thanks you guys. It polishes up nicely (I don't polish the front of the cylinder, though).

I guess polishing one's carry gun might point to something a being just a little off, but I justify it as making certain no rust is starting anywhere. And, if I ever needed to pull it in defense, I hope the sight of a big shiny revolver might make an errant soul change his ways . . . quickly.

There's a Glock Collectors Club: the mind boggles. Look at my Glock! It looks like all.. the... others.....

That being said, I'm proud of my 1st Gen G17. Bought it way back in '86. It was the first Glock I ever saw.

I had a 1st gen 17. Kind of wish I still had it. I sold it in a fit of "clean up" induced by my wife. I have since told her to NEVER talk about selling ANY guns. Period.

Since I polished up one of my other primary carry guns last night, and because I enjoy showing off a polished gun, I thought I'd post a photo of it as well.

This is my beloved GP100.  It's had some smoothing work done to the action, cylinder holes chamfered, and trigger radiused.  The green fiber optic front sight was an easy addition.  I swapped out the original larger GP100 grips for their "compact" grips (the same that Ruger uses on the 3 inch barrel models).  The inserts are Texas Mesquite I bought from a seller on a different forum.

This is revolver number 2 of my primary carry tribe (I'll post revolver number 3 some time later).  With the compact grips and an IWB holster, I can't make it print under a t-shirt, no matter how I twist or bend.  It is crazily accurate and surprisingly easy to shoot with full-house 125 grain JHP's.

Honestly, when I bought this, I got it because it came for a really great price. I prefer the GP100 now over a Smith because of the design.

The entire trigger assembly and cylinder are easily removed for cleaning.

From what I can tell, there are only 2 screws in the gun, one in the rear sight and one that holds the cylinder release button. That means I don't have to deal with screws coming loose under recoiling ammo. With that 629 above, checking for loose screws is part of my cleaning ritual.

The cylinder is latched in a little bit tighter than a Smith, due to an additional latch in the front of the cylinder. Additionally, the cylinder latch which stops the cylinder before the round is fired is off center, so it doesn't get as beat up as the latch on a Smith, which is centered.

All that adds up to being a slight bit more durable than a Smith.

I have also found that it is just a little more accurate than a Smith. Not a lot, just a little bit.

The cylinder release in a Smith can sometimes bang my shooting thumb, but the release on the GP100 is higher and out of the way.

Finally, the total length of trigger pull is just a little bit shorter than a Smith, which made double action firing just a little bit easier than a Smith.

don't own a Python so I can't compare to that, but it's a moot point for me, since Pythons are sooooo expensive now.

?So the Ruger is kind of like the old Smith Triple lock.

I have to admit that I have mostly been put off by the appearance. I keep hearing about how well they shoot, and overall I like Ruger (except for their stint of anti-2A a while back). I think they make fine bolt action rifles although I don't own any. I am not so fond of the single action line, being a Colt type. I truly dislike the gate-operated loading feature. Old 3-screws are great, though. I have 3.

Their autos all seem too revolver-like. The grip angles correspond to the Glock - which was made to correspond to revolvers. I don't hold that way so have to make myself aim and shoot. One of my problems in cowboy shooting - I don't naturally point the SAA's.

The grips on the 101's are probably effective but they look ... well ... cheap. Aesthetics are important for me. Shouldn't be, but they are.

Not quite. The far end of the ejector rod doesn't lock in, so it's not a triple lock.

I wasn't thrilled with the Ruger rubber grips at first, but as with so many other things on the GP100, I grew to appreciate them more and more as I used them. I think Bill Ruger a genius when it came to design for double action revolvers. It's just too bad that the GP100 wasn't introduced until after the US police forces started the shift to semi-autos.

I WISH Colt would start producing revolvers again. That current Python price tag is just a little much for me. The Python will be in the collection some day...

I am still keeping an eye out for a used Python that's got some wear on it but in good mechanical condition, and hopefully a somewhat reasonable price, preferably in stainless. That's about the only kind of Python I could allow myself to shoot and carry.
