    BCG's Empty BCG's

Post by Devereaux Sat Oct 24, 2015 7:05 pm

So I was hanging out on the SigTalk forum and noted on a thread that my 516 acted badly with .223 ammo but worked fine with 5.56 stuff. One guy commented that all I needed to do to shoot anything was to remove the gas rings on the bolt as that was a hold-over from their DI gun and  had no useful purpose on a piston gun.

?You guys know anythi8ng about that or have any opinions. I am not up on all the functionality of the bolt on the BCG. I k now tthe gas rings should be replaced when they wear out, but that's for DI's. Don't k ow about the piston stuff.

The other suggestion was to replace the buffer spring with a carbine spring. That should make it work with anything.

    Teach me, dudes!

I would try the spring trick first if you have a spare carbine spring. Those gas rings aren't the easiest things to get on and off--changing a spring is much faster. That is interesting though about the recommendation to remove the gas rings. I don't think I would do it without talking to an official sig guy on the phone first--but it makes sense that they wouldn't be necessary. I wonder if they would help keep the bolt centered though.

I would think that the rings could help center the bolt - and keep the boltface concentric with the bore.

But.... I'm a finance guy dumb enough to think he could do an engineer's job. That level of hubris should be left to engineers.

I do happen to have a couple carbine lenght springs. I may have to try that, just for grins. It would be nice to be able to shoot .223.

BTW - I seem to be having thee craziest reaction to posting on this forum. Every time I hit the space bar, the post dives down, only to come back up with the second letter typed. Makes no difference whether I use the built-in screen keyboard or my bluetooth one. And only on this forum. Weird.

I'm embarrassed that I missed Corn's earlier post with the same supposition as mine. But, great minds think alike -- and our too.  Wink

This forum software does some crazy stuff.  I've had to modify some Win7 default settings to get this forum to work consistently. It may be driven by Doc's lever/ leaver paradox.

Well, I am using Windows 10. But I don't have the problem up here with the desktop. It's with the iPad. It's IOS stuff. And ONLY this forum. NO idea what is happening, but it is rather disconcerting to have your post diving back and forth while you attempt to make at least a little English sense.

Dev, I've picked up a couple of suppressors in the past year and am starting to shoot my AR's suppressed.  I've found my DI AR's really gas me out when shooting suppressed, a smell similar to rotten eggs shrouds my head when shooting this setup.  I have been reluctant to purchase a piston due to the premium price when compared to DI, but found some Adams Arms blemish Piston AR's at Bud's guns for about $600 (turns out it is a pretty nice AR, not the greatest furniture, but for $600, what the hey?).  Turns out there are not gas rings installed on this bolt as received.  There is, however, a small spring at the back of the bolt, installed onto the small protection behind the gas rings, that keeps the bolt pushed forward in the carrier.

Whether or not this will work on your SIG or not I am not certain, but based on this, it just may.

Otis, which calibers are you shooting suppressed in your AR's?

5.56/.223 and 300 blk. Also, have a S&W M&P 15-22 that I run with the can, a real hoot! My rifle suppressor is a 30 cal, so I could go 308/7.62, as well. With a subsonic 300 blk, it is pretty darn quiet, but even with supersonic ammo, it brings the sound levels down enough that you won't go completely deaf if fired indoors. I will run my 9mm suppressor at times, but only with a subsonic rifle round, it won't handle the higher pressures of the supersonic rifle rounds. In fact, the 9mm suppressor is my preferred suppressor for my 300 blk pistol when running subsonic since it is so much lighter than the 30 cal suppressor.

Otis, any chance you can post a pic of the BCG in your piston gun. I am having a touch of trouble envisioning just how it looks. ?Is it a coil sping around the rear section.

Man, it would be nice if Illinois would finally pass legalization of suppressors!

Yes, a coil spring that wraps around the rear diameter of the bolt.  I found a decent couple of pictures here:

Got it. Now I understand what you have.

I guess the question of centering the bolt seems unrealistic to me because the bolt is in a tube wherein it rotates, and is fixed there by the camming bolt. ?How would it get out of center.

I may try taking the rings off and see how it works.
