Tons of snow and tons of lead... Empty Tons of snow and tons of lead...

Post by Cornmastah Tue Jan 03, 2017 10:56 pm

Been getting tons of snow lately, but it hasn't stopped my family and friends from doing outdoor shooting. It's been pretty fun, actually, despite the cold. I think I have been casting and shooting more now, than during the summer--probably due to the lack of extra chores like mowing the lawn and such. Had an itch to make some old wadcutters for the 38 airweight as well as my gp100 match champion. So I fired up the old lead pot and made some, powder coated them, loaded them, and then unloaded them. Super cold, but lots of fun.

TJ, you should get into casting... so much freedom when it comes to shooting when you can make your own bullets (and even design your own molds and then make your own bullets from your own designs).

One of the "problems" with your system is that it takes so long to make them - and then so short to shoot them. Gone in the blink of an eye. Mad

Ha ha dev, yes, but with the cost savings, it is so worth it. When I do get out to shoot, I feel like I can shoot as much ammo as I want without worrying about it. The other thing is, I actually enjoy the casting and loading process. It is a very relaxing thing for me to do when I can't get out to do some actual shooting. Other times, I feel like the mad scientist, and enjoy developing weird loads.

Wish I could get into casting. The powder coating is one of the neater parts. But considering my house, it isn't likely to happen any time soon.

?What is the weight of the wadcutters.

They were either 75gr or 100gr wadcutters. The mold I was using casts 3 different sizes, 75, 100, and 150. Pretty fun and relaxing to make bullets.

Well, I await a video. I am curious how it casts such a variety of bullet weights from one mold.

The mold used in that video was a special one with 3 different cavity sizes. Basically, it would cast a small bullet, a medium, and a larger bullet when I filled up all 3 mold cavities. Really quite a cool mold. I'm kind of lucky in the sense that I live so close to two of the top custom bullet mold manufacturers in the world. I've gotten to know Al from NOE pretty well now, and sometimes he gives me prototype molds to try out. He is also going to produce a bullet mold for a bullet I designed for subsonic 458 socom as well as single shot 45-70's with a little higher BC than some of the big flat nose 45-70 bullets.

So then you sort through the three different bullet weights or only fill one cavity at a time.

I fill all cavities and sort them afterwards.
