SR9C

Ok.... I have decided to change my EDC to the Ruger SR9C....  
so this is a major departure from my norm.  going to a semi auto and 9mm..... my paradigm is kicking me right now.. but I have been shooting the ruger at the range lately due to the 9mm not being as expensive as my other toys' fodder and realized that this thing is excellent.. (save the stupid mag disconnect, loaded indicator billboard and thumb safety).  It has good bore axis, good grip angle, not heavy, virtually no recoil and is more accurate than I first realized..... so why not...
I am sure Big Jack will be pining to get back in my holster and I will eventually succumb to that pressure and carry him again... but I figure, likely for summer the SR9c will get the duty.
Anyone have/carry a SR9/9c or other caliber offered in that platform from ruger?  any thoughts?

A buddy of mine carries a SR9C (here in Cali, of all places.) He's taken it through several Front Sight classes and it's been flawless. I've shot it: an accurate and controllable little pistol. Mayhaps a little blocky and lacking some ergonomic refinements; but overall, very serviceable.

If I had the opportunity, I'd also look at the M&P 9C (my wife's choice) or the Shield.

I already own the 9c. I just was contemplating it as EDC...
doesn't look as blocky as my XDsc... a little longer in the slide though....

I'm sure you'll like the SR9C as an EDC. My friend said it was fairly well represented at his training. He likes it a lot after 2+ years of carrying. When we were looking for a CCW for the wife, the SR9C was a very close second to the M&P 9C in the shoot-off. What holster are you planning on using?

Hey Doc - I have a 9c. I think it is an excellent firearm. I don't carry it, but I have thought about putting it in the line-up for my daughter to choose from.

I have put about 13-1400 rounds through it, and it hasn't hiccupped ever. I, too, don't like the loaded chamber thingy, and I think the safety is basically useless. But as a smaller 9, it shoots well, and is easy to control. It has 2 different length magazines; I tend to find the longer sort of feels better in the hand, but the spacer will tend to walk some, so I don't know how long it would be around. The shorter mag is perfectly fine to shoot with, and would make the weapon print less.

All I've fired through it is 115 gr FMJ, so I can't speak to how it eats other ammo, but I suspect it wouldn't be a problem.

My XDsc and compacts with the full mag and spacers kind of do the same thing, so it doesn't appear to be Ruger only.
So I have been wearing it past couple days... I like it. hides well too...
I just gotta get past it being a 9mm.... I know there is nothing wrong with that, but I grew up carrying and shooting the big boys..

Don't feel bad, Doc. I carry a "weedle" gun - a PPK in .380 (plus 2 extra mags - because I have them). And all I do is pray I don't actually have to shoot someone. Once you get to the shooting, calibre won't matter as much as doing good.

1) You guys carry a reload mag?
2) How is it carried? Snagmag? Magholder?
3) Is the reload mag full size or compact?

Seems to me a full sized mag gives you 4 - 5 additional rounds with a larger grip and better control, with few, if any, negatives. Thought I'd ask if that was a prevalent practice.

I can't take it anymore.  Doc, as one of your biggest fans, I've gotta say something.  It's time for a wheelgun intervention.  That groaning sound you hear is Elmer Keith, Skeeter Skelton and Bill Jordan all rolling over in their graves.  

Nothing wrong with with semi-autos.  I own several.  I carry one from time to time.  I've recently purchased a couple of semi-auto 9mm's.  I've even carried a semi-auto 9mm a handful of times.  I'm sure it's effective, and even has its benefits.

However, after decades of your carrying God's defensive gift to his people (the mighty S&W 686), loaded properly in the caliber delivered from Mount Sinai itself (the mighty 357 magnum), I don't think you will ever get truly comfortable with a semi-auto 9mm.  

Sooner or later, you'll be shooting that SR9c at a range, you will hear the ka-boom of a magnum revolver being fired by someone else, you'll miss it, and Big Jack will be back in the saddle again.  At least, that's how it has always played out for me when I considered going semi-auto.

(After reading this, I hope my humor comes through. I don't mean to step on anyone's gun of choice.)

CF - I carry a Walther PPK in a pocket holster, with 2 mags in the other side pocket. Gives me 21 rounds. Were I to carry something BIG, it would be a Sig 229 in .357 Sig. Which I have but no holster (yet) so haven't tried toting it around.

Ha.... I carry semi's on and off... have for as long as I have been carrying.
I always have a wheel gun with me.  I am carrying the sp101 in mag as a backup to the SR9c now.

When I carry semi I do have a spare mag.  With the XD guns I have (all of them have small grip) I carry the respective "full mag" with it. They have spacers on them.  I pretty much always now have them in a Remora mag holster and can go from iwb to pockets on them depending on the garb.  The full size mags are much harder to hide without a coat.  One way I do it is to put it in one of the pants pockets and let the shirt drape over it.  I feel naked without a reload, regardless of the gun.

I love those Remora mag holsters. They're great for pocket carry of magazines, as well as carrying knives.

One way to look at the 9 is to consider it's just a .38 in caseless form. Then you could get a 1911 in .38 Super - that way you THINK you have a revolver but have an auto instead.

Just pretend it's the rear sight on a Model 29. THAT flings itself back and forth some, too.
