The Mighty 10mm Empty The Mighty 10mm

Post by Tennessee Jed Fri May 09, 2014 11:41 am

Hey Doc, just finished listening to this week's show.  As always, a great show.

You mentioned that you might do a show on the 10mm sometime.  I think that is a great idea.  I recently listened again to, I believe it was, the "Less Than Or Equal to 10" show, and noticed you talked a bit there about the 10mm also.

I'd just like to second the idea of a 10mm show.  I think it's a great caliber, very underserved by ammo makers (other than Double Tap, Buffalo Bore and Underwood), and has a great story behind its creation, even though the whole FBI-agent-as-wuss part is still a bit depressing.

If you think that 10mm by itself wouldn't be enough meat for a show, you could always add the 41 magnum to the topic, since the calibers have a similar start (being touted hypothetically by then-prominent gun writers), similar short-lived adoption by law enforcement, similar ballistics, and similar cult followings today.  I don't know a whole lot about the 41, but would really like to hear more about it.

Not to mention, Buford Pusser carried a 41 magnum and Sonny Crockett carried a 10mm.  That, by itself, is pretty darn cool .

    I second the motion...

    maybe 10mm, .357 sig, 41 magnum, and .38 super

I have a glock 20 as well as a glock 29, but have never shot any of the other calibers listed above.

Oh yeah! 38 Super! I recall Doc and AJ saying before that it was an interesting cartridge.

I remember the "Heavy Duty" show from a while back, where Doc discussed the history of the 38-44. Was a great show. Very interesting. I'm sure coverage of some of thesw other interesting cartridges would be another great show.

    +1

Lately, there's been a intrawebz meme about shooting .40 S&W through an unmodified G20 10mm. Possible, as the .40 is simply a cut-down 10mm and both headspace on the rim. Don't know about the advisability though...

Think I will do a show lumping those cartridges together... or maybe a series of them.
give history and the science behind them etc....

It'd be nice to hear a survey of the past and present 10mm firearm choices, and maybe the G-lock variants and accessories.

A mention of the public perceptions of the 10mm, with a reference to the Harold Fish case, would probably be in order.

I agree.  I would also be interested to hear thoughts on defensive ammo for the 10mm.  Seems that there's a general split in thought.

On one hand are those who think there's nothing wrong with ammo from the boutique companies (e.g., Double Tap, Buffalo Bore, Underwood) that really push the cartridge to levels it was intended to have.

On the other hand are those who think that only ammo from major manufacturers should be used (e.g., Winchester Silvertip, Hornady XTP, etc.), because the boutique companies use bullets not intended by the manufacturers to be driven at those higher velocities.

Personally, I'm sort of a neanderthal, so I like Double Tap and Underwood 165 grain Gold Dots running at about 1400 fps, because if high velocity is good, then higher velocity is better.

On a completely irrelevant note, tonight I'm shooting a Glock 20 at an IDPA match. However, I'll be shooting hot 40 S&W ammo through a Lone Wolf conversion barrel, because spraying 10mm brass all over the floor makes me cry like a schoolgirl.

Haven't settled on 10mm SD ammo, yet.

But have you seen the 135gn Cor-Bon? 1400 fps, 588 ft lbs. Whee!

I've seen it, but not tried it. My reluctance has been because I've heard from a couple of people that 135's weren't very accurate in their G20's. My experience is limited to 155's and 165's, all of which are much more accurate than me.

Although I sure like the concept. I'll need to give them a try.

So, I couldn't help but notice an announcement on AJ's blog that the next show will be about the 10mm.

I am VERY much looking forward to hearing this.

Given that Col Cooper was a red-blooded American, why does the 10mm use the foppish Frenchie/German Euro mm designation? Was he secretly a pinko Euro commie? I can't think of any other recent US originating handgun calibres using mm, all seem to use the fractional inch designation - .454, .50, .357Sig, .40SW, .41 etc.

    Great episode however, very interesting.

I have to agree.. but remember Cooper was wanting t call it .40 Super. Which I like better Smile
It may have been the ammo mfg or Bren that wanted to call it that.. and in the end, they are the ones putting the dollars on the line, not Cooper.
The early 10mm Guns and Ammo still cracks me up.

    Great show Doc. Thanks.

Yeah, my bet would be that it was Norma wanting to name it in the metric manner. Silly Norwegians.
