Saw one of these in .357 mag at a local shop. Anybody shot one of these before? Thoughts?

I have had one for a couple of years now.

Its very light, handy rifle that averages 2.5"-3.5" groups at 100 yard with factory ammo.

I sold a Winchester 94AE in .357 to buy the 77/357 due to needing a gun better suited to harsh conditions. I do not regret trading the 11 round capacity for the low maintenance, utility, and reliability of the 6 round (counting one in the chamber) bolt action.

I'm still experimenting with the scope and sling set up to find what works best for my situation.

The 77/357 and my SP101 are usually what I have on me when I head out to the rural areas. Between the both of them, I feel I have most firearm related problems covered in my area.

    Welcome, Hoosier!  Very good info.

At one time my SHTF loadout was a Marlin 1894C and a GP100 - both in .357. Might have to reconsider the leaver*.  Or.... go with the Glock 17 and a 9mm carbine that takes the Glock Happy Sticks (KelTec sub2000?)

    * An homage to our podfather Doc Wesson, who because of his bucolic upbringing in a holler of North Carolina, (mis)pronounces lever as "leaver".  Wink

    Thanks CF.

I actually had sent a text to Doc about the virtues of the 77/357 in February of 2015. It was discussed briefly in the podcast. My take away from it was they thought it was a cool, buy expensive rifle.

My Winchester 94AE had several issues. It made 2 trips back to the factory before the Repeating Arms Co. closed. Ultimately it sat in my collection in a "like new state" as I never fully trusted it. The prices on them have steadily risen to ridiculous levels and when a collector offered me a offer I couldn't refuse, I sold it to him, and purchased a new 77/357, Leupold scope and had cash left over.

I looked in vane for the Marlin Model 1894CSS, but they seem to be as hard to come by as Unicorns. One and a GP would be a great combo. I'd like to have both some day!

The 17 and a Sub-2000 in 9mm would be a great combo too. The Sub-2000 seems to be hard to find around my parts, so I have never handled it. I keep hoping they will make a carbine that takes Sig 229 mags.

I flew relief flights to MSY after Katrina, I could see the merit of the 9mm combo in a similar, unfortunate situation.

I see the .357 shining in a less urban setting. I view my set up as "jack of all trades, master of none". Adequate range/effectiveness out the rifle and adequate concealment/effectiveness out of the hand gun. Depending on you location, your mileage may very.

I'm hard pressed to find anyone around my parts to pronounce it Leee-ver.... (sorry Doc)

Welcome to the forums Indiana Tim!

I love pistol & carbine combos. For a while, I was trying to do combos for everything, ie: beretta CX4 9mm carbine to share mags with my beretta 92, leverguns in all sorts of calibers with matching revolvers, even a BFR to match the 1895 in 45-70. Just all kinds of fun I guess.

    Thanks Cornmastah.

I tend to pair guns as well, its a odd compulsion. Originally it started with the .357 because I was new to shooting, just out of collage and financially limited. It made sense to buy one caliber to feed two guns.

In Indiana (until this year) the .357 was one of the few calibers that we could use to hunt game with in a rifle. So logic and finances won out and 15 years later I still roll with it.

I started out with the Smith & Wesson SC360 paired with the Winchester 94AE .357. Today its a Ruger Sp101 and 77/357.

The 77/357 defiantly lends its self better to a wider array of shooting positions than the lever gun. I feel it also easier to use optics on as well.

Wow, the BFR in 45-70.... that's a monster hand cannon. I cannot imagine the fireball out of the muzzle!

I looked in to the CX4 and 92 at one time. I have smallish hands and didn't like the ergos on the 92. If one could make it work, I would bet that that's a great setup.

The glock 19 paired up with a 9mm ar-15 with a lower that takes glock mags is also a good setup.

Glad you are here, Indiana. Welcome.

I've been working with a Rossi 92 357 mag carbine for a couple of years now. I put a red dot on it, overhauled the action (following the instructions from the Steves Gunz Rossi 92 DVD), and I love that stupid thing to death. What I love most is, handloading pistol calibers is soooooo much faster and easier than handloading rifle calibers.

Corn, your matching pistol / rifle combo . . . in 45-70 . . . wins you the badass of the day award. That is awesome!
